In conjunction with Austin Health’s dedicated rehabilitation cancer centre, The Olivia Newton-John Cancer Centre (named in honour of Olivia’s own battle with breast cancer), the wellness walk will serve as a heartfelt tribute to the Hollywood star’s late sister, who tragically lost her battle with brain cancer earlier this year.
Rona Newton-John, a former model and actress, was diagnosed with brain cancer in April this year and passed away in May. She was 70-years-old.
In addition to the symbolic commemoration, the four kilometre walk will also fundraise for the Melbourne based state-of-the art centre, with Olivia planning to establish a dedicated brain tumour wellness program to help other brain cancer sufferers.
“Losing her [Rona] has been one of the hardest things in my life and it’s really strengthened my resolve,” Olivia said.
During her trip down under, the Grease star and ‘Let’s Get Physical’ singer will be accompanied by her husband John Easterling, as well as Rona’s adult children, and says the fundraiser will be an activity for the whole family.
“We’re making big strides and the messages have been extremely supportive,” she said.
While in the country, Newton-John is also set to host a Grease themed gala dinner in Melbourne, to mark the popular 1978 film’s anniversary.
The Wellness Walk will take place in Ivanhoe on Sunday September 15 from 11am. For more information see The Olivia Newton-John Cancer Centre website.
