Right now in Goulburn it’s Lilac Time
Goulburn NSW -
The City of Goulburn in regional NSW is once again gearing up for its annual Lilac City Festival, to be held over the October Long Weekend (4th – 7th October, 2019).
Now in its 68th year, the Festival has seen many changes and it’s no different this year. With a revitalised committee, the Festival will see the return of a number of favourites as well as some new additions.
The iconic Lilac Time Street Parade will make an exciting return at this year’s Festival, on Sunday 6th October at 11am. The Parade will feature decorated vehicles, marching bands, historic cars and more. A float to encourage small businesses to enter the parade in the future will also be included.
A big focus for this year’s organising committee has been on community involvement. The lead up to the Festival has seen local businesses get on board with window displays and sponsorship. Many residents have also become involved via the annual garden competition.
Lilac Festival Committee Secretary, Jennie Gordon said, “It has been a great year of firsts for the new and current committee, we have been on a huge learning curve and hope that the inclusion of so many community groups can be a spring board for the future.”
“The Goulburn Lilac City Festival is a community festival and should always have a visible committee of at least nine people. Inviting others to participate and have active rolls in the festival provides opportunity for growth and celebration.
“Enjoy the festival this year and we hope to get feedback and engagement from lots of other community groups for next year”, she continued.
The committee is working with local attractions and various businesses to light up prominent buildings in the colour lilac. The Goulburn Visitor Information Centre, the Big Merino and more will turn various shades of lilac throughout the duration of the Festival.
Fun for the whole family will feature over the entire weekend including, the ever-popular Joyland Carnival, community markets and food stalls in Belmore Park, and a range of free entertainment.
A range of displays will be available for viewing across the weekend, featuring Festival memorabilia in the Goulburn Community Centre and floral displays at the Goulburn Soldiers Club.
An official opening will be held on Saturday 5th at the Belmore Park Rotunda. The opening will include the crowning of the Lilac Queen and the Lilac Prince and Princess. A presentation announcing the winners of the Garden Competition and Business Displays will also occur.
The Festival will conclude on Monday 7th with continued activities in Belmore Park and the Community Bike Ride starting at Carr Confoy Park.
The Goulburn Lilac City Festival is Australia’s longest continuously run community festival.
