Let the Truffle Hunts Begin
Goulburn NSW -
The beginning of the 2019 black winter truffle season is almost here and truffle producers around the region are preparing to harvest their delicacies and celebrate the season.
For Denzil and Anne Sturgiss of Tarago Truffles, the season will officially begin on Saturday 16th June, with the ‘Blessing of the Dogs’.
“Professor Tom Frame of the Mulwaree Anglican Parish will again seek divine assistance for our four legged friends without whom the truffle could not be detected”, said Anne Sturgiss.
“Once blessed, a special hunt will begin with professional truffle dogs leading the way to the unearthed treasures under the trees”, continued Mrs Sturgiss.
The first hunt of the season will be followed by a celebratory lunch, courtesy of community friends of the Parish. Proceeds from the day will be set aside for much needed maintenance and restoration works on the historical churches within the Parish.
Truffle harvesting is essentially a winter activity as the cold kilo-joules of the winter frosts are needed to fully mature the black winter truffles.
Truffle hunts at Tarago Truffles will be held throughout winter, where visitors are able to hunt with the harvesters and truffle dogs, getting down and dirty digging for the elusive fabled fungi from under the trees.
“The special experience that we offer at Tarago Truffles includes hunting for truffles with the dogs and handlers, experiencing some truffle tastings and learning all about growing and preparing the truffle for market”, said Mrs Sturgiss.
