ROCKHAMPTON REGIONAL COUNCIL CALLED ON TO IMPLEMENT COMPLETE LEAD-FREE PLUMBING SOLUTION

ROCKHAMPTON REGIONAL COUNCIL CALLED ON TO IMPLEMENT COMPLETE LEAD-FREE PLUMBING SOLUTION

LEAD IN WATER A SERIOUS PROBLEM IN THE UNITED STATES AND CANADA

ROCKHAMPTON KIDS POTENTIALLY MOST AT RISK

Rockhampton Regional Council is being urged to heed warnings from the United States and Canada of poisonous lead levels in drinking water and to eliminate the problem by introducing lead free plumbing solutions.

Lead in drinking water continues to be a major problem in cities like Mt Isa where children in that area have been found with lead levels much higher than normal.

Lead and other harmful metals have been leaching into water systems globally and are now being highly publicised. Recently, both Canada and the US were found to have lead leeching into potable water systems from outdated pipes and plumbing fixtures, risking the health of hundreds of thousands of people, including young children and students.

While lead is rarely used in potable water pipes in Australia, it is still widely used in plumbing products such as brass fittings in areas like Rockhampton. Brass fittings are a recognised source of leaching lead into drinking water; particularly where water has been sitting in contact with brass plumbing products.

A Brisbane based plumbing products supply company has written to Rockhampton Regional Council introducing its lead-free plumbing solutions.

Saveur Pacific Pty Ltd says it has sourced an easy to use, cost-effective plumbing system with 100% lead-free components to ensure drinking water remains clean and free of any unwanted toxins leaching into the water.

Company spokesperson, Mark Sutton, says that the timing couldn’t be more important to introduce lead free plumbing systems and products.

“There is no legislation in Australia which bans the use of lead in brass fittings, with standards allowing up to 4.5 per cent lead content in brass alloys used in plumbing systems, while the US and Canada limit its composition to 0.25 per cent, some 18 times less,”

The World Health Organization outlines that ‘there is no level of exposure to lead that is known to be without harmful effects.’

“We have developed a new product call Xpanda which is highly suitable to new builds, public infrastructure and renovations and will suit all plumbers with its ease of use and affordability.”

“We’ve been dedicated to developing a 100% lead-free, cost-effective plumbing system for years and have worked tirelessly with our manufacturer to ensure it succeeded.

“Of specific concern to us that Rockhampton school kids – like we have seen in the United States – have increased exposure to lead both at school and at home. This needs to stop.

“Our Xpanda solution combines stainless steel and plastic components to ensure drinking water remains as clean as possible,” Mr Sutton said.

Saveur Pacific Pty Ltd are hoping to discuss its Xpanda solution with Local and State Governments on appropriate local and state-owned projects/assets.
