PEAK STRATA BODY ENCOURAGES BUILDINGS TO ENFORCE A ‘ZERO TOLERANCE’ POLICY AGAINST UNRULY GUESTS

New Year’s Eve revellers be warned, New South Wales apartment owners and managers are being urged to adopt a “zero tolerance” policy for poor behaviour during this year’s New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Airbnb and short-stay guests could face hefty fines if police are used to stop out-of-control partygoers.

Thousands of people will stay and celebrate in holiday apartments over the New Year’s Eve festive period, and the peak organisation representing these owners in New South Wales says it’s time zero tolerance policies were brought into play.

Wilful damage to common property, unsafe and unruly behaviour and illegal activities are a few of the repeated problems that New South Wales apartment owners face every year during on New Year’s Eve.

Strata Community Australia (NSW) say apartment and unit owners should not be left to foot the bill for reckless behaviour and is pushing a hard-line attitude to be adopted by New South Wales strata communities.

SCA (NSW) President Chris Duggan says, “New Year’s Eve is not an excuse to get away with wrecking property that is not yours or being a nuisance to long term residents at your holiday destination.

“Ultimately, at the end of the day, guests should know what is right and what is wrong, and they should question whether their actions will cause damage or problems for others in the building.

“At the first signs of unruly behaviour, owners and managers will consider using local police to control offenders, which could quickly add up to become an expensive holiday bill.”

Mr Duggan says regardless how short the stay, properties are a lifetime investment and short-stay guests must acknowledge the financial consequences.

“We are encouraging short-term guests to take care when celebrating this New Years’ Eve and consider the impact of their actions on people’s lifetime investment.”

“Unfortunately, it’s common for strata communities to sustain thousands of dollars of damage to private lots and common areas following festive holiday periods, which is unacceptable.”

“I’d encourage communities to assist over the New Year’s celebrations by providing clear rules for short-term guests as to what is appropriate and inappropriate behaviour on their property.”

Mr Duggan says zero tolerance policies aren’t an exercise in ‘fun policing’ and hopes to see some common sense taken by holidaymakers celebrating this New Years’ Eve.
